Bioshock Movie Coming to Netflix
Netflix announced back on Thursday that Francis Lawrence would be working on directing an adaption of the 2007 hit video game, Bioshock. Francis Lawrence is known for his work on the Hunger Games and 2005’s I am Legend. In addition, the screenwriter for Logan and Blade Runner 2049, Michael Green is working on the game adaptation script. Lawrence is no stranger to dystopian settings and movies. He has worked on movies the likes of three Hunger Games in addition to the zombie-infested post-apocalyptic survival horror movie I am Legend. Bioshock hardly needs an introduction. The game was developed back in 2007 by Irrational Games which was briefly known as 2K Boston and 2K Australia. The first-person sci-fi horror FPS allowed players to step into the shoes of Jack, a man who discovers Rapture after surviving a plane crash in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The dystopian city found at the bottom of the sea was inspired by the Objectivist writings of Ayn Rand after he survived a horrible plane crash similar to Jack’s circumstances. Jack had to make his way through Rapture fighting off the denizens of the city in an attempt to find his way home. Back in 2007, Bioshock opened up with a bang and shook the gaming industry with its iconic opening scene. The game is set in the year 1960 and you’re flying over the Atlantic Ocean but unfortunately, the player crashes and you appear to be the only survivor. Floating in the water, you make it to a lighthouse surrounded by the remains of the aircraft’s wreckage. A small submersible, the Bathysphere is close by, and then, the player journies into the depths of the ocean and makes his way to Rapture. The gritty, cramped, and suffocating atmosphere makes you feel like you’re underwater. Something ominous is amuck. The city is completely trashed and mutants by the name of splicers are seen roaming the city. At the heart of all of this is a substance known as ADAM that makes genetic mutations possible. You get your hands on your first plasmid power which allows you to shoot lightning out your fingers. There were lots of character customizations to go around. But the game had its bad moments too. The game had optimization issues and featured some tedious stuttering and hitches. The game was a bit easy considering there were no death penalties. But those caveats don’t take away from its amazing gameplay and impeccable story paired with its gritty and dark atmosphere. You come across more plasmids on the way in addition to tonics. Players go up against big daddies, find little sisters and uncover the mysteries of the underwater city. Bioshock is its own genre. The game featured an amazing yet eerie atmosphere paired with amazing visuals at the time. What really set the game apart was its compelling story and interactive fiction as you uncovered the mysterious plot and lore of the game. The game was a commercial hit and critically acclaimed by fans and critics alike. It went on to inspire two more follow-ups to the franchise with 2010‘s Bioshock and the third installment in 2013, Bioshock Infinite. It no doubt was the most iconic game of the two decades. The plans for a live-action Bioshockmovie were in thought for as long as 2008 after the first installment was released. It was announced back in 2008 that Take–Two Interactive was partnering up with Universal Studios to produce a movie based on the game with director Gore Verbinski and scriptwriter John Logan. And then, the plans for the movie went silent up until 2017 when it was announced by Ken Levine that the Bioshock movie was canned. But why was it canned? It was due to the commercial failure of Verbinski’s 2009 Watchmen and his insistence on an R rating for the movie followed by his departure which both played a role in the cancellation of the movie. Lawrence is currently working on filing another iteration of the Hunger Games titled “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” Fans are hopeful that Lawrence will nail the movie and keep it true to the original Bioshock in terms of storytelling, setting and plot. Fans are unsure if the movie will be a hit or miss as game-based adaptations don’t turn out so well as we’ve seen with the Street Fighter movie, the Tekken movie, and many others. We can cross our fingers and hope the movie turns out well. And if it does, we might get to see Booker DeWitt go on a rampage in the city of Columbia in the future.
