However, the spotlight of the event was, obviously, the Game of The Year Award, and that is what most of the fans were hyped for with games like God of War Ragnarök, Elden Ring, Stray, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Horizon Forbidden West, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 all fighting for the ultimate crown.
Although fans and enthusiasts had already concluded that Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök are the two main contenders for the Game of The Year title, all the other games competing for the throne were equally deserving, since they were good enough to be nominated for such a prestigious title in the first place. Elden Ring was named Game of the Year 2022, adding yet another honour to its name and a milestone to the list of achievements for souls-like games. Even before its release, the game won several awards, including the award for the Most Anticipated Game of 2022. It also took home five awards from Gamescom 2021: Best Sony PlayStation Game, Best PC Game, Best Action-Adventure Game, Best Role-Playing Game, and Best of Gamescom. And finally, Elden Ring won the Golden Joystick award for Most Wanted Game earlier this year. And after its release, the game not only got critical acclaim but was also loved by geeks for its complex yet highly-enjoyable gameplay that keeps you on your heels while playing it. Other than that, recently Elden Ring also won the Ultimate Game of The Year Award at the Golden Joystick Awards 2022, beating God of War Ragnarök. However, God of War Ragnarök didn’t let Elden Ring win that easily and proved itself to be a worthy sequel and contender for the title; with its stunning visuals and spectacular storyline, it managed to impress the fans of the franchise and built itself well upon its predecessor both in terms of commercial success and critical acclaim. It took home the Best Performance, Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Action/Adventure Game, Best Score and Music, and the Innovation in Accessibility award the same night. But the jury and public voting ultimately chose Elden Ring to as the best game 2022 had to offer. It should be noted that jury voting accounts for 90%, and public voting only makes up 10% of the end result. Still, 10% is not a small deal, and it looks like the multi-platform abilities of Elden Ring have given it an edge by reaching the masses and attracting more players to vote for it at the awards.
